How many first aiders does a workplace need?

Every employer must assess what first aid their workplace needs. This is called a first aid needs assessment, and it’s a legal requirement under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. The HSE’s guidance gives a starting point.

Lower-risk workplaces

Offices, shops, libraries

Under 25Usually at least one appointed person
25 to 50Usually at least one first aider trained in Emergency First Aid at Work
Over 50Usually at least one first aider trained in First Aid at Work for every 100 employees

Higher-risk workplaces

Light engineering, food processing, warehousing, construction, dangerous machinery or chemicals

Under 5Usually at least one appointed person
5 to 50Usually at least one first aider trained in Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work, depending on the injuries that could happen
Over 50Usually at least one first aider trained in First Aid at Work for every 50 employees

These numbers are a starting point, not a limit, and your own needs assessment may point to more. Plan for extra cover if you have shifts, holidays and sickness, several floors or buildings, remote sites, or people with particular health needs. An appointed person looks after first aid equipment and calls for help, but is not a trained first aider.

Mental health at work

There’s no law that says you must have mental health first aiders, but employers do have a legal duty to assess the risk of work-related stress. Training helps people notice problems sooner and talk about them.

Common questions

Quick answers about choosing a course.

Every employer must provide adequate and appropriate first aid for their employees. What counts as adequate comes from your first aid needs assessment. Even a small, low-risk workplace needs at least an appointed person.

Yes. Tell us roughly how many people work for you, what the work involves and how many sites or shifts you have, and we’ll suggest what to book. The needs assessment itself is your responsibility as the employer, but we’re happy to help you think it through.

Not on its own. It teaches CPR and defibrillator use, but Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work are the courses designed for workplace first aiders.
